CURRENT EXHIBITION: Gavin & Turk

Ben Brown Fine Arts
Open until 20th April 2012

Like all artists, Gavin Turk’s name is his brand and in the schizophrenic title for this show, he turns it into a family brand.   Throughout 25 years of artwork, Turk has questioned authorship, identity and the handmade.  This new exhibition is no exception, but here, he chooses to pay homage to Alighiero Boetti, an Italian conceptual artist prominent in the sixties and seventies, who is the subject of a Tate Modern retrospective, running 28 February – 27 May 2012.

Boetti was fascinated by symbols and created embroideries of the world map, with each country made from its own flag.  He saw his role as orchestrator, rather than executer of a work, with his original Mappas based on a schema by friend and collaborator Rinaldo Rossi and embroidered by a team of craftswomen in Kabul, Aghanistan.

Like Boetti, Turk is collaborating with a production team to create his latest embroideries.  The designs will be worked up by members of Fine Cell Work, a charity and social enterprise that teaches needlework to prison inmates, in order to support the rehabilitation process.  “I think one of the interesting things about tapestry is how slowly the picture comes out of the picture frame,” says Turk.  “It’s so intense. You have to go close and further away and close and further away; it’s like the image slowly unweaving itself.”

For Spring/Summer 2012 Mother of Pearl fuses their signature relaxed sportswear inspired aesthetic with high contrast colour blocking and graphic prints from Turner Prize shortlisted artist, Fiona Banner.

Known for her interest in the transference of language into a visual form, Banner’s work, such as ‘Break Point’ and ‘Don’t Look Back’, forms narratives across the collection, from cascading text prints across floor length skirts, jumpsuits and shirts, to punctuation detailing on oversized jersey t-shirts. In addition, Banner has created a custom ISBN (International Standard Book Number) for this collaboration that features throughout the collection. A first for Mother of Pearl, this ISBN officially classifies the SS12 collection as an internationally recognized publication.

Introducing embellishment in the form of beaded collars and embroidered logos, a touch of elegance is added to the sportswear inspired silhouettes. Staple printed and plain silks in both heavier weight and finer feminine crepes make up the core collection while summer materials such as light weight wools, linens and organza add texture and depth to this wearable collection.

A fresh palette of mint and lime greens, pastel oranges, petrol, electric and pale blues are juxtaposed against muted stones, creams and blacks. Banner’s inky, illustrative prints add a gestural energy and depth to the clean colour palette.

The collaboration with Pierre Hardy continues for Spring/Summer 2012 with trainers featuring the season’s signature prints. The sneakers along with a selection of t-shirts, sweatshirts and bags are adding to the growing range of unisex styles from the label.
