As part of Selfridges’ pioneering Project Ocean campaign to ban endangered fish from its menu, suppliers and retail outlets, The House of Fairy Tales will be taking up residency for three days in the Ultra Lounge to present their first ever fully interactive theatrical production.

Taking the form of a treasure map adventure trail, full of Ancient Greek mythology and 19th Century visual narratives seen through a modern-futuristic sci-fi perspective, this game is designed to raise awareness of the issues around endangered fish and threats to the eco-systems of the ocean as well as to celebrate our magical underwater landscapes.

Current: Time/Bank and Time/Store

It was in an equally economically disturbed time when the American anarchist Josiah Warren opened the Cincinnati Time Store in 1827. The store was an experiment in alternative economics and existed for three years. The idealistic aim was to set up an exchange system where money wasn’t necessary to acquire products. Goods were bought in exchange for human labour and value was measured in time currency.

After its closure it wasn’t until last year that a second, similar shop opened its doors – the concept had found its way into the art world. Time/Bank—Time/Store was first opened at E-Flux on Essex Street in New York in November 2010 and has recently opened a branch in Den Haag. Driven by the current distrust of existing financial and economic systems and the radical cuts in art funding, Julieta Aranda and Anton Vidokle are offering a platform for artists and the general public, where they can access a different economy and evaluate the capitalist system whilst participating in an art project.

NEXT WEEK: A Tarot Deck Art Project at the Warhol Mueum

Contemporary Magic: Andy Warhol Museum

The Tarot deck is many things: revered diviner of knowledge, feared revealer of hidden secrets, and critiqued promoter of quackish myth. Regardless of one’s take on Tarot card reading, it is certain that the history and imagery of these mysterious cards is ripe territory for contemporary artists to come up with their own interpretations of the 78 personas that make up the standard Tarot deck. And that is exactly what my divine colleague Stacy Engman set about doing as she assembled a group of some of today’s most dynamic artists and asked them to submit a new work based on a tarot card personally assigned by her.

The resulting images are just as whimsical as the readings that emerge from an actual reading of the cards. The amazing group of artists included in the project created cards in a range of media (photography, painting and collage) and each infused an additional sense of allure and magic into this already heavily charged lam of mystery. Not only may viewers enjoy the actual works in the exhibition of the original cards, but they may also take them home in this unique catalogue in the form of a deck of Tarot cards in and of itself!

Artists include Subodh Gupta, Agathe Snow, Catherine Opie, Tracey Emin, Lawence Weiner, Nan Goldin Rachel Howard, Anette Messager, Barnaby Fumas, Yoshitomo Nara, Richard Phillips and many more.
