Gasp, cringe, or have a sly chuckle: Rude Britannia will certainly cause a reaction. See politicians brought down to size and the great and the good exposed; blush at the saucy postcards and laugh out loud at the slapstick fun – but watch out for that banana skin!

Put together with some the country’s best-known cartoonists and comedy writers, this exhibition explores British comic art from the 1600s to the present day. Bringing together a wide array of paintings, sculptures, film and photography, as well as graphic art and comic books, the exhibition celebrates a rich history of cartooning and visual jokes.

Looking at comedy that is both timeless and of-its-time, Rude Britannia contrasts contemporary artists such as Angus Fairhurst with key historical pieces, and covers everything from Hogarth to the YBAs.

LAST CHANCE: Franz West – The Ego and the ID

It is your last chance to see Franz West‘s public art installation The Ego and the ID this weekend at Doris C. Freedman Plaza in Central Park, which is available for viewings until Monday 23rd August 2010.

The Ego and the Id is internationally acclaimed artist Franz West’s newest and largest aluminum sculpture to date. Soaring 20 feet high, the piece consists of two similar but distinct, brightly colored, looping abstract forms, one bubble gum pink and the other alternating blocks of blue, green, orange, and yellow. Each of the forms curve up at the bottom creating stools that invite passersby to stop, take a seat, and directly engage with the artwork. The sculpture is only truly complete once the viewer interacts with the work. The Ego and the Id is consistent with the artist’s overarching desire to produce sociable environments for viewing art using his signature combination of whimsy and monumentality.

Created specifically for West’s first comprehensive American retrospective this past fall at the Baltimore Museum of Art, The Ego and the Id borrows its name from one of Sigmund Freud’s best known texts, in which he explores the ego’s battle with three forces: the id, the super-ego, and the outside world. Removing the gallery walls heightens the connection between West’s work and Freud’s work, allowing these forces to intermingle with the streets of New York City as a backdrop.

PROFILE: ‘Work of Art’ runner up Peregrine Honig

Peregrine Honig was a runner up in the US reality show Work of Art: The Next Great Artist. The creative competition series brought together fourteen aspiring artists to compete for a solo show at the prestigious Brooklyn Museum and a generous cash prize. ARTINFO spoke to the reality show’s first runner-up about the dress that she commissioned for last week’s screening party at the Brooklyn Museum, and also about whimsy, wax, museum worms, and why winner Abdi Farah is like a mythic Thomas Campbell hero. To read the interview, click here.
